Why insurance: managing risk

Reading depth

What you'll be able to do

Insurance transfers risks too big to self-fund — sell from need and dependents, not from a product.

  • Insurance transfers a risk too big to self-insure, for a predictable premium.
  • Start from need and dependents, not from a product.
  • Income protection (disability) is often overlooked but central.

Investing grows wealth; insurance protects it. Insurance exists to transfer a risk the client can't afford to bear themselves — premature death, disability, a critical illness — to an insurer, in exchange for a predictable premium. The core question is never 'what product?' but 'what would go wrong financially if X happened, and who depends on this income?'

Good insurance selling starts from need, not from a product shelf. A single person with no dependents and no debt may need little life insurance but real disability coverage, because their biggest asset is their ability to earn. A young family with a mortgage and one income has a large, time-bound protection gap. The need analysis (Module 5) drives the amount and type.

Frame insurance honestly: it's a cost that buys peace of mind and continuity, not an investment that's expected to 'pay off.' The best outcome is that the client never needs to claim — and that framing keeps the recommendation grounded in protection, not speculation.

Key points

  • Insurance transfers a risk too big to self-insure, for a predictable premium.
  • Start from need and dependents, not from a product.
  • Income protection (disability) is often overlooked but central.
  • Frame it as protection/continuity, not an investment expected to pay off.

Examples

The income you forgot to insure

A healthy 30-year-old's largest asset is decades of future earnings. Disability insurance protects that earning power — frequently a bigger gap than life insurance for someone with no dependents.

Pitfalls

  • Leading with a product before establishing what risk it's meant to cover.
  • Selling insurance as an investment that should 'beat the market.'
