Earning referrals ethically

Reading depth

What you'll be able to do

Earn referrals by serving well, ask specifically without pressure, and follow the rules on referral arrangements.

  • Referrals are earned through suitable advice, honest disclosure, and good service.
  • Ask specifically and without pressure; make it easy and low-stakes.
  • Referral arrangements (especially paid ones) are regulated — disclose and follow firm rules.

Referrals are the healthiest growth source because they arrive pre-trusted — but they're earned, not extracted. They flow naturally from doing the core job well: suitable advice, honest disclosure, and reliable service. A delighted client who feels genuinely helped will introduce you; a client who felt sold to will not, no matter how you ask.

When you do ask, do it specifically and without pressure: 'If you know someone navigating a similar decision, I'd be glad to help them too' beats a generic 'know anyone who needs investments?' Make it easy and low-stakes, and never make the client feel their relationship with you is contingent on producing names.

Be aware that referral arrangements — especially any that involve compensation or referrals between licensed and unlicensed parties — are regulated. Disclose referral relationships to clients, ensure anyone you refer to (or who refers to you) is appropriately licensed for what they do, and follow your firm's referral-arrangement rules. Ethical referrals compound into a durable book; sharp ones invite complaints and regulatory trouble.

Key points

  • Referrals are earned through suitable advice, honest disclosure, and good service.
  • Ask specifically and without pressure; make it easy and low-stakes.
  • Referral arrangements (especially paid ones) are regulated — disclose and follow firm rules.
  • Ensure referred parties are appropriately licensed for what they do.

Examples

Specific beats generic

'If a friend is weighing a first home and an FHSA like you were, I'd be happy to help them think it through' is easier to act on than 'know anyone who needs an advisor?'

Pitfalls

  • Pressuring clients for names or implying the relationship depends on it.
  • Ignoring the rules around paid referral arrangements and licensing.
