The main asset classes

What you'll be able to do

Cash, bonds, and stocks each trade return for stability differently — blending them is how portfolios get built.

  • Cash: stable, liquid, low return — exposed to inflation.
  • Fixed income: lends for interest; lower volatility than equities.
  • Equities: ownership; highest long-run return and volatility.

Most investments fall into a few broad buckets. Cash and equivalents (savings, GICs, money-market funds) are stable and liquid but barely outrun inflation. Fixed income (bonds) lends money to governments or companies for regular interest and lower volatility than stocks. Equities (stocks) are ownership stakes — the highest long-run return historically, and the highest swings. Alternatives (real estate, commodities) round things out.

Each class behaves differently, and that's the point: they don't all move together. Bonds often hold up when equities fall, which is why blending them smooths the ride. Understanding the buckets lets you explain why a portfolio is built the way it is, instead of pitching a single product in isolation.

Clients rarely buy a single asset class directly. They buy a mutual fund or a segregated fund that holds a mix — which is exactly why you need to know what's inside before you recommend it.

Key points

  • Cash: stable, liquid, low return — exposed to inflation.
  • Fixed income: lends for interest; lower volatility than equities.
  • Equities: ownership; highest long-run return and volatility.
  • Classes move differently, which is what makes blending them useful.

Examples

Why a balanced fund holds bonds

In a sharp equity sell-off, the bond sleeve of a balanced fund often falls less (or rises), cushioning the overall drop so the client is less tempted to sell at the bottom.

Pitfalls

  • Describing a fund by its name without knowing the asset mix inside it.
  • Assuming 'bonds are always safe' — credit and interest-rate risk are real.
