The single most useful question for a tourist: où est… ? ("oo eh", "where is...?"). Open with the politeness layer first, then ask:
• Excusez-moi, où est la gare? — Excuse me, where is the train station?
• Pardon, où sont les toilettes? — Sorry, where are the bathrooms? (note: sont because toilettes is plural).
A slightly more formal alternative is où se trouve…? ("where is found..."). Same meaning, marginally more polished — common on signage.
Useful destinations to know: la gare (train station), la station de métro (metro station), l'arrêt de bus (bus stop), la pharmacie (pharmacy), l'hôpital (hospital), la banque (bank), le distributeur / le guichet automatique (ATM), l'office de tourisme (tourist info), les toilettes (bathrooms), le supermarché (supermarket), le marché (open-air market), la poste (post office), l'hôtel (hotel).
If the answer is too fast, the rescue phrase is: pouvez-vous parler plus lentement, s'il vous plaît? ("can you speak more slowly, please?"). Use it without hesitation — most French speakers will gladly slow down.
